(6) WOODY CRUMBO (NATIVE AMERICAN, NEW MEXICO, 1912-1989) ETCHINGS Etchings, each pencil signed. Woody Crumbo was an artist, Native American flute player, and dancer who lived and worked mostly in the West of the United States. He attended government schools as a child and showed such promise that he received a scholarship to the American Indian Institute in Wichita for his last two years of high school. While at the Institute, he became interested in expressing Indian tradition and culture through his art. At the early age of 21, Crumbo was appointed Director of Indian Art at Bacone College, the only institute of higher learning exclusively for Indians. Bacone offered Crumbo the unique opportunity to familiarize himself with his heritage and to instill in him cultural pride. At that time he conducted research into Indian design and revived ancient techniques of silverwork, vegetable dying, and weaving. A Pottawatomie Indian, Crumbo explores in his art the traditions and ceremonies of his own tribe as well as those of the Creek, Sioux, and Kiowa nations. Crumbo works in oil and egg tempera, as well as in watercolor, sculpture, stained glass, and silkscreen. Under the guidance of Olle Nordmark, he also learned etching. The largest collection of Crumbo's work, about 175 paintings, is owned by the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, although his work has been exhibited in many museums throughout the United States.

- A Laundryman's Porcelain Occupational

Circa 1917
bearing the name and date Dave Leff / 1917 in gilt lettering, and depicting an engine-powered laundry truck reading Passaic Home Laundry.underside marked J&C Bavaria.Height 3 3/4 inches.
According to the genealogical record, David Leff (circa 1884-1937) was born around 1884 in Austria. He immigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century and settled in New York with his wife, Rose. The United States Federal Census of 1910 records that Leff worked as the proprietor of a laundry, and throughout the 1910s, frequent advertisements for Passaic Home Laundry appeared in the Passaic Daily News. On March 23, 1916, the paper reports that a Mrs. Rose Goldblack won a suit for $46 against the laundry company, claiming that her clothes became discolored upon their return. Further, on February 20, 1917, The Morning Call of Paterson County covered an incident involving a coal wagon, in which a team of horses belonging to the Passaic Home Laundry and driven by a George Leff, became frightened by a passing freight train and crashed into the wagon.
Perhaps in light of these incidents, David Leff's professional endeavors had shifted by 1920, by which time he was working as a jeweler. Leff died of coronary thrombosis on March 25, 1937,

The William Penn Hose Company No. 18 was organized on February 3, 1830, in Kensington, Philadelphia. The firm operated exclusively as a hose company until 1864 when it acquired a steam fire engine and began to serve as a steam fire engine company. The company's service in this capacity continued until 1871 when the city of Philadelphia established a paid fire department.
U.S. Federal Census returns from 1920 identify a William Peake (circa 1875-1956) working as a fireman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born in England and immigrated to the United States with his wife, Mary, in 1892. According to early census records, Peake worked first as a laborer before transitioning to a career as a fireman between 1910 and 1920.

A Potter's Porcelain Occupational Shaving Mug Belonging to Julius Stoeffler
Late 19th Century

The historical record documents a Julius W. Stoeffler, variably listed William J. Stoeffler, as a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was born around 1878 in Lehigh County to William and Alice Stoeffler. William Stoeffler was born in Baden, Germany in 1852 and immigrated to the United States around 1871. He settled in Pennsylvania where he worked as a potter, according to U.S. Federal Census records, and his son Julius apparently pursued the trade, too, in conjunction with his wage-earning work as a builder.

- A Patriotic Porcelain Shaving Mug Depicting
A Patriotic Porcelain Shaving Mug Depicting the U.S.S. Mississippi
Early 20th Century
bearing the name M. Fogelson and U.S.S. Mississippi in gilt lettering, and depicting the lead naval battleship in the Mississippi class between two American flags.underside marked Bavaria and signed C.P. Haim.Height 3 3/4 inches.
The Mississippi was built by the United States Navy between 1904 and 1908. She served with the Atlantic Fleet from 1909 to 1912, when she was placed on reserve. In 1914, the Mississippi was reactivated as an aviation support ship during the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico. She was purchased shortly thereafter by Greece in July 1914 and renamed Kilkis, becoming the flagship of the Greek fleet amidst the country's naval arms race with the Ottoman Empire.
U.S. Army Transfer Service Documents recording the arrivals and departures of enlisted men between 1910 and 1939 indicate that M. Fogelson may refer to Michel Fogelson (1892-1963), or possibly his brother Mair Fogelson, both Russian or Polish immigrants who came to the United States in the early twentieth century and served in the Navy during World War I. According to Military Naturalization Petitions, Fogelson took the Oath of Allegiance on June 28, 1918, in Washington, DC, and was aboard the President Grant with Co. L, 50th Infantry by 1919. Military records connect him to the Grant, the Princess Matoika, and the Cantigny, but unfortunately, any connections to the Mississippi remain unfounded.
